capacities grew by six percent in 2021 to a record level of 295 gigawatts and are projected to increase by eight percent to 320 gigawatts this year, the global energy watchdog said in a report on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, the growth could lose steam in 2023 and beyond due to \u201cuncertainties and policy-related implications,\u201d International Energy Agency (IEA) said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cNew capacity for generating electricity from solar, wind and other renewables increased to a record level worldwide in 2021 and will grow further this year as governments increasingly seek to take advantage of renewables\u2019 energy security and climate benefits,\u201d said the IEA report.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The world added a record 295 gigawatts of new renewable power capacity in 2021, overcoming supply chain challenges, construction delays, and high raw material prices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The report said the global capacity additions were likely to rise this year to 320 gigawatts \u2013 \u201cequivalent to an amount that would come close to meeting the entire electricity demand of Germany or matching the European Union\u2019s total electricity generation from natural gas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Paris-based watchdog said the solar PV was on course to account for 60 percent of global renewable power growth in 2022, followed by wind and hydropower.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But the outlook does not look so promising for 2023.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cRenewable power\u2019s global growth is set to lose momentum next year,\u201d the IEA report said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIn the absence of stronger policies, the amount of renewable power capacity added worldwide is expected to plateau in 2023, as continued progress for solar is offset by a 40 percent decline in hydropower expansion and little change in wind additions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the European Union, annual additions jumped by almost 30 percent to 36 gigawatts in 2021, exceeding the bloc\u2019s previous record of 35 gigawatts set a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The report noted that the additional renewable capacity commissioned for 2022 and 2023 could significantly reduce the European Union\u2019s dependence on gas in the power sector.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cHowever, the actual contribution will depend on the success of parallel energy efficiency measures to keep the region\u2019s energy demand in check,\u201d said the report.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol said energy market developments in recent months \u2013 especially in Europe \u2013 had proven again the essential role of renewables in improving energy security, apart from their effectiveness at reducing emissions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cCutting red tape, accelerating permitting and providing the right incentives for faster deployment of renewables are some of the most important actions governments can take to address today\u2019s energy security and market challenges, while keeping alive the possibility of reaching our international climate goals,\u201d
