By 2050, we want our environment to be free of harmful pollutants,\u201d her vice president, Frans Timmermans, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; \">\u201cOur proposals to further reduce water and air pollution are a crucial piece of that puzzle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; \">The plan includes a revision of EU legislation, the Ambient Air Quality Directive and the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; \">They would introduce regular reviews, more than halve the annual limit for fine-particle pollution in the air, and make wastewater treatment more effective by, for instance, recovering more nutrients from it for recycling use.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; \">A \u201cpolluter pays\u201d principle would be applied to toxic micro-pollutants in water \u2013 92% of which the commission said comes from pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; \">A key proposal is the compensation for those who have suffered where EU air quality norms have been violated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; \">Claims could be made under class-action litigation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; \"><b>Flexibility for EU countries to meet targets<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; \">Each of the EU\u2019s member states would be free to come up with their own specific measures to reach the goals, with the commission reserving the right to start infringement procedures \u201cas a last resort\u201d against any that fall short.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; \">There would be \u201ceasier procedures for local and regional authorities to go against and impose penalties against the polluters,\u201d the EU\u2019s environment commissioner Virginijus Sinkevi\u010dius said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; \">He said the air quality standards being aimed for were closer to those set out by the World Health Organisation, \u201cwhich fully take into account technical feasibility and then of course social economic considerations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b>Euractiv<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Climate Change News<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":3494304,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"content-type":"","inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[89,88],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3501408","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-daily","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
