European Union Member States have adopted new regulations on Tuesday to increase the demand and consistent use of renewable fuels in the maritime transport sector.<\/p>\n

The regulation proposes measures to ensure that the greenhouse gas intensity gradually reduces in maritime fuel from 2 % in 2025 to 80 % by 2050, along with incentives for the use of non-biological renewable fuels and the exclusion of fossil fuels from the certification processes.<\/p>\n

In addition to renewable fuels<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The regulation also mandates that passenger ships and containers use the onshore electric grid for all their electricity needs while docked at major EU ports starting from 2030, aiming to mitigate air pollution at ports.<\/p>\n

The EU adopts a new law for more charging and refueling stations across Europe.<\/b><\/p>\n

The regulation allows for temporary exemptions for ultra-peripheral regions, small islands, and economically dependent areas relying on their connectivity. Sanctions resulting from the regulation’s implementation will be used to support projects for the decarbonization of the maritime sector. The new rules will be effective from January 1, 2025, except for certain articles that come into force on August 31, 2024.<\/p>\n

The agreement comes under the Spanish presidency of the Council. In this regard, the Minister of Transport, Mobility, and Urban Agenda, Raquel S\u00e1nchez, praised that the new law will provide legal certainty to ship operators and fuel producers and “will help launch the large-scale production of sustainable maritime fuels,” aligning with the climate objectives at both European and global levels.”<\/p>\n
