After its entry into force, EU Member States will have two years to transpose most of the different elements in the directive into national law.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today\u2019s publication marks the final step in the legislative process that started with the Commission proposal in July 2021, as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/strategy-and-policy\/priorities-2019-2024\/european-green-deal\/delivering-european-green-deal\/fit-55-delivering-proposals_en\">\u2018Fit for 55\u2019 package<\/a><u>, <\/u>which was supplemented by an additional proposal as part of the<a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/strategy-and-policy\/priorities-2019-2024\/european-green-deal\/repowereu-affordable-secure-and-sustainable-energy-europe_en\"> REPowerEU plan<\/a> in May 2022.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The new directive introduces a series of measures to help accelerate energy efficiency, including embracing the \u201cenergy efficiency first\u201d principle in the energy and non-energy policies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Changes from the previous directives 2018\/2002 and 2012\/27\/EU include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Establishing an EU legally-binding target to reduce the EU\u2019s final energy consumption by 11.7 % by 2030 (relative to the 2020 reference scenario). This includes for each Member State the requirement to set its <strong>indicative national contribution based on <\/strong>objective criteria reflecting national circumstances. If the national contributions do not add up to the EU target, an ambition gap mechanism is applied by the Commission.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Increasing annual energy savings from 0.8 % (at present) to 1.3 % (2024-2025), then 1.5 % (2026-2027) and 1.9 % from 2028 onwards. That\u2019s an average of 1.49 % of new annual savings for the period from 2024-2030.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Obliging Member States to prioritise vulnerable customers and social housing within the scope of their energy savings measures.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Introducing an annual energy consumption reduction target of 1.9 % for the public sector as a whole.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Extending the annual 3 % buildings renovation obligation to all the levels of public administration.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Introducing a different approach, based on energy consumption, for business to have an energy management system or to carry out an energy audits.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bringing in a new obligation to monitor the energy performance of data centres, with an EU-level database collecting and publishing data.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Promoting local heating &amp; cooling plans in larger municipalities.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Progressively increasing the efficient energy consumption in heat or cold supply, also in district heating.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Source: European Commission<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Climate change news<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":3503813,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"content-type":"","inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[89,88],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3506429","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-daily","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
