Following the recent approval of the royal decree governing the issuance of Guarantees of Origin (GoOs) for hydrogen, Global Factor and the University of Deusto have joined forces in the “Hazitek H2Go” project. This project stands out as an innovative initiative in the face of the legal and technological challenges facing the promising hydrogen sector.<\/p>\n

During the project, Global Factor has examined the associated legislative requirements, highlighting the urgent need to ensure the transparency and coherence of the system in order to strengthen confidence in all actors involved, from producers to consumers.<\/p>\n

This study marks an essential step towards the adaptation of the application and clearing procedures for Guarantees of Origin (GoOs). Three main types of guarantees have been identified during the analysis: Grid Compatible Gas, Renewable Hydrogen and Biogas. It is essential to understand the distinction between these types to avoid confusion and to ensure that the system operates efficiently and effectively. One of the main conclusions of this study is the need not to confuse the type of guarantee of origin with the attribute of the gas type within the GoO. This distinction is vital to maintain the integrity of the GoO system and prevent double counting of renewable energy. Furthermore, the interaction between renewable gas and electricity GoOs is highlighted, underlining the complexity of today’s energy landscape.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the University of Deusto has carried out an exhaustive analysis of hydrogen generation technologies. This study goes beyond considering hydrogen as a simple energy vector, recognising it as a potential agent of change towards a more sustainable energy system. Green hydrogen, produced from renewable sources, stands out as the cleanest option with the greatest potential to drive a green economy.<\/p>\n

The study covers everything from electrolysis, the most promising method for green hydrogen production, to thermochemical and biological processes, underlining the importance of certifying all generation technologies to ensure their sustainability.<\/p>\n

In addition, a study on the feasibility of certification of generation technologies using GdOs has been carried out, exploring the current status of green hydrogen generation certification. Existing certification procedures were reviewed, emphasising the development of initiatives for a green hydrogen origin assurance system to ensure transparency and reliability in its production and use. The application of blockchain technology is discussed as a promising solution to ensure the integrity and transparency of GdO records.<\/p>\n

Finally, the entry of new actors in the hydrogen sector has been analysed, from resource providers to final consumers, including producers and logistics agents.<\/p>\n

In conclusion, it is worth highlighting the need for a GoO management model that addresses hydrogen traceability and establishes effective certification mechanisms. In addition, collaboration between the public administration and all the agents involved is important to ensure the effectiveness and legitimacy of the system as a whole.<\/p>\n
